TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER is a free flowing granular mix formulated to remove paint, shop soils, rust and light scale from jet engine parts by immersion methods.

TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER is highly alkaline and should not be used on tin, aluminum, zinc or any alloy containing these metals as the major constituents.

TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER will not attack ferrous alloys, magnesium alloys , stainless steels, brass, bronze or Monel alloys when used as directed. TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER can be used on titanium alloys at up to 8 ounces per gallon of water at temperatures up to 170°F (77°C).


TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER offers these features:

  1. Nonflammable in powdered or solution form
  2. Readily soluble in cold water at recommended concentrations.
  3. Easily rinses from parts with high pressure water or by immersion methods.
  4. Removes Sermetal W.
  5. Solution is controlled by simple titration.


Note: Do not mix TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER (T-4181) with any chemicals other than water, or add any other chemicals to TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER (T-4181) except as directed in TURCO Technical Data Bulletin or control procedures.

Tanks: Tanks and associated equipment must be fabricated from stainless steel.

Precleaning: Heavily soiled parts should be precleaned to remove excessive oils and shop soils to reduce excessive contamination of the TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER bath. Your TURCO Sales Engineer can recommend a suitable pre-cleaner based upon the types of soils involved and your precleaning operations.

Mixing: Fill tank to 3/4 of the operating level with lukewarm, clean water . Add TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER, at the ratio of 2 to 3 pounds per gallon of the final volume of water, slowly to the top of the tank while mixing and mix thoroughly until powder is dissolved. Never "dump" large quantities of powder into water, since excessive heat may generate local pockets of steam which may lead to a steam eruption. When all powder is in solution, add remainder of cold water. Operate tank from 190° to 200°F, (88°C to 93°C) with an immersion time of 15 to 30 minutes.

Note: When processing titanium alloys, use no more than 8 ounces of TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER per gallon of water. Operate tank at a temperature no higher than 170°F (77°C) for 15 to 30 minutes. Higher concentrations and higher temperature may attack titanium alloys.

Rinsing: Rinse parts with high pressure spray rinse or by means of an overflowing, agitated immersion method. An immersion rinse followed by hand spray with air and water rinse is also acceptable.

Solution Level: Solution level should be maintained by the periodic addition of clean, cold tap water for optimum results.

Sludge Removal: Insoluble particles removed by TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER should be removed once every three to six months. The use of sludge basket in the bottom of the tank is recommended.

Dispose of spent solution per local, state and regional regulations. Refer to TURCO MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET for additional disposal information.


TURCO ALKALINE RUST REMOVER contains sodium hydroxide. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Do not take internally. Use with adequate (equivalent to outdoor) ventilation.

Protective clothing such as a chemical face shield or goggles and gloves, apron and boots, made from alkali resistant materials must be worn when handling and using this product. A NIOSH approved respirator should be worn during mist conditions or when using this product in confined areas.

Add product to tepid water with care to prevent formation of local pockets of steam which may lead to steam eruption. Keep containers sealed when not is use. Transport and store in closed containers below 130°F (54°C).

Hazardous carbon monoxide gas can form upon contact with food and beverage products in enclosed spaces and can be fatal. Follow appropriate tank entry procedures (see ANSI Z117.1-1977).
